5.2. Test Suites Management

Add a Test Suite

When an authorized user opts to add a new test suite, then a form is shown to enter new test suite's information.

User will be required to provide title of the test suite.

Options to add description and to assign a parent suite for suite being newly created are available, and for assigning a parent suite user can select one from list of pre-existing suites.

If custom fields of type "Option box" and "Multiple Choice Option box" are present under the project, then they can be used to define the skip conditions, for this user can select a custom field to be used in condition and select the value for it to drive the condition.

Skip Conditions are used to auto-skip test case(s) from execution which are not required or cannot run on a specific configuration. For example, if for a test suite which need not to run in local environment, then a custom field named Environment can be created with different options like local, staging, production etc., then user can add skip condition for local environment for that particular test suite. Similarly user can apply multiple skip conditions for each test suite.

Here, title is the only mandatory field.

Edit a Test Suite

The form, used to update the selected test suite's record gives the option to change the test suites title, description and its parent.

Import Test Suites from Other Projects

This feature helps the user import test suites from other pre-existing projects.

The option is available under Import menu on Test Suites & Cases tab.

If an authorized user opts to import the test suites from other project(s), then a form like this will be shown.

If there are other projects that have test suites created/copied under them, then their list will be on under project's drop down. When a project is selected then typing in the suites' selector box shows up the names of suites that match the criteria entered.

As an option one can click on the "Select from tree" icon, this will show up the suites' list to select suites from the tree shown.

User can select one or more suites he wishes to import, and will have option

This helps in grouping reusable cases and saves suites' creation and management time

Difference between linking and copying

Linking a test suite will only 'link' the original test suite user has created without creating any copy of it. This feature is useful when user wants to share some common tests between his projects.

When a suite is linked then it can visually identified by a separate icon  and there are some restrictions on the operations that can be performed over a linked suite in target project:

  • It cannot be edited here
  • Its child suites and cases cannot be edited or deleted
  • Its child suites and cases cannot be moved out of it
  • No other suite or case can be moved in this linked suite
However, the linked suite can be moved and made a child of other existing not-linked suite.
There is also an option to Unlink the linked suite.
Copy function, is used to duplicate all child suites and test cases under selected test suites from the source project to the destination project. This is recommended when there is some level of similarity in projects but user intents to alter a test suite differently for destination project.

Copying means any change in suite or cases made in this (target) project will have no effect onto the project (source) from which it was copied and vice verse.

Exporting Test Suites

This lets a user export a test suite to a CSV file.

This helps in grouping reusable cases reducing redundancy, and saves suites' creation and management time, when a suite with similar cases is required elsewhere.

The option for exporting to a CSV is available under the Export menu on Test Suites & Cases tab.

If a user opts to export the test suite, then a form like this will be shown.

On this page user can export the suite by selecting its name, once the name is selected, a CSV having all the cases under the suite will be generated and will be available for download on to the user's machine.

Please note that only the cases under selected suite will be exported, and its child suites will not be exported. For complete data, use XML export.
